Seminar "Design Culture"
28.09. 10:00–16:00
At the seminar "Design Culture" the design specialists from different countries debate about understanding and development of design culture in society. How are aesthetics, ethic, business, semiotics, education, technological heritage and organisation culture connected to design culture? Is the well-designed organisation capable of creating products and services of high design value? Does design thinking facilitate understanding of design being holistic and human-centred, not just creating beautiful things? How much will commercial success be influenced and can efficiency be the only big end for the organisation? Emotions are as important as intellect; immeasurable things are as important as measurable. We try to find the human side in business.

The seminar "Design Culture" leads us to humanity in design and business.
Michael Thomson, a well-known design strategist, Jak Spencer, an expert of inclusive design and Oscar Tomico, a specialist on smart textiles show us the ways to improve the quality of life with the help of design. Christian Pagh from Denmark tells us how to vivify design culture in the context of organization. Kristian Keinänen, the president of Ornamo and Kristjan Mändmaa discuss about design education and design awareness. Jüri Kermik concentrates on plywood and furniture. Simo Heikkilä discusses about ebbing of hands-on abilities. Deborah Alden from New York opens up the backgrounds of 21st century fashion industry. Thilo von Debschitz offers an interesting study to friends of graphic.
The seminar is moderated by Ilona Gurjanova and the panel discussion by Michael Thomson.

Fashion Design Show D_O_M – DESIGN IS IN FASHION
28.09. 19:00
During Tallinn Design Festival an exceptional event of presenting clothing design D_O_M – DESIGN IS IN FASHION takes place. Through attractive and conceptual show D_O_M presents ambitious evolving Estonian designers who have fixed their brands existence and are looking for new challenges and markets. The audience will be part of the cultural experience through spectacular show that opens up brand concepts and DNA.

Clothing, the closest commodity to human body, has got a determined role in connection with person`s health, movement, security, nature and physical capacity. While being objects between the inner and outer world of the man, clothes and accessories tell us a wordless story about the person.

There is also a small catch: whether we care for fashion or not, we all wear clothes!

Clothing is a functional agent as well as a personal complement to the whole. Design clothing should complement the situation, create value and fit in with environment no matter a workday or fabulous celebration. Clothing is a playful tool bringing out personality and thereby a great companion for vital moments. Estonian designers always seek for the best innovations in technology, production process and strive for quality in every detail.

Design apparel is something that lasts; worth to repair and devise. These are wearables that stand for beauty and are made for living.

As a culmination of the fashion show the winner of VEGS Fashion Contest Tallinn 2017, the competition of sustainable and eco-friendly apparel design, will be announced. The competition is launched in co-operation with Estonian textile brand VEGS, company VEGAN LIFE, a pioneer in vegan fashion and textile manufacturing from Italy, The Association of Designers of Estonia (EDL) and Estonian Fashion Brands Association (EFBA).

The staging is composed by choreographers from the group Must Kast.
Sphere of sound is set by Lepatriinu.
The show of D_O_M is produced by Piret Mägi.
